Today Miami-Dade County and Lufthansa Airlines officials welcomed the inaugural Miami International Airport arrival of the airline's Airbus A380, the largest passenger airliner in the world and the first in a new generation of fuel-efficient aircraft.  MIA is the fifth airport in the nation and the first in the southeast U.S. to obtain A380 service.

Lufthansa will use the double-deck aircraft for its daily nonstop service between Frankfurt and Miami. The double-decker airliner features a total capacity of 526 in first class, business class and economy class; but can accommodate more than 800 passengers if configured for economy class only.

The aircraft boasts two large, luxurious bathrooms on the upper deck with separate changing and restroom areas and a main-deck economy class that features in-seat video screens on a slender seat back for additional passenger space.

There is only 38 A380 aircraft in service worldwide today. According to Airbus, the current retail price of the A380 is $375 million. It is also the world's most fuel-efficient aircraft, burning approximately 12 percent less fuel than any other commercial aircraft.
