German estate agency Engel & Völkers has opened the company's first office in Mexico, citing demand for high end properties.

The residential brokerage opened an office in Los Cabos, serving communities such as San Jose Del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, according to a news release by the company.

"The international demand for high-end property and professional consultancy is very high," managing director Vanessa Fukunaga said in the release.

Despite Mexico's well-documented drug war, the country's property is gaining investor interest, according to Reuters. International investors are focusing on housing and infrastructure, Alpine Woods Capital portfolio manager, Joel Wells told Reuters.

Prior to opening the new office, Engel & Völkers represented over $1 billion of real estate in Los Cabos in the last 16 years, according to the release.

Engel & Völkers now has offices in 36 countries.
