The demolition of a 10-story historic building in downtown Houston turned into a community event Sunday. People threw parties and gathered at dawn to watch the carefully orchestrated implosion of the building, which was home to a branch of the Macy's department store.

"How often do you see a building coming down?" one spectator told the Houston Chronicle.

Crowds cheered when the building blew up and crashed to the ground, an event which took about 10 seconds. The implosion caused a series of small fires, which were quickly extinguished.

The 70-year-old building will be replaced by an office tower.
