The property division of Carrefour Argentina has opened Terrazas de Mayo, a new shopping centre valued at $29 million, the first major commercial project to be completed by global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan in the Americas.

Located 30 kilometers west of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Terrazas de Mayo is a new 130,000 square meter centre which features 130 shopping outlets and a large range of brands, and has resulted in the creation of 1,000 new jobs.

It includes a 10,900 square meter Carrefour hypermarket, a ten-screen Cinemark and a 720 square meter 'Neverland' amusement park, as well as a 24-lane bowling alley.

The centre also features a 3,500 square meter food court with 14 restaurant and food and beverage outlets, some with external terraces for al fresco dining, plus 1,600 covered car parking spaces.

Broadway Malyan's expert retail design experts in Madrid (Spain) and Santiago (Chile) collaborated to create the concept design for the extension of a former shopping mall on the site, to develop the design and project manage the scheme, partnering with local partner GDM.

The design concept is inspired by the natural environment and large trees that surround the centre. It features large windows, terraces, skylights and courtyards to integrate the exterior and interior environments and create a bright and engaging experience for visitors.

Broadway Malyan Director Jorge Ponce Dawson said, "Our expert design team has worked in close partnership with long-standing client Carrefour to deliver its first shopping centre in Argentina, which is also our practice's first built project in the Americas - having opened studios in Santiago, Chile, in 2013 and São Paulo, Brazil, in 2011."

Director of Carrefour's Property Division in Argentina, Marcelo Rodríguez Cáceres says, "Given its prime location, the centre will inject a commercial dynamism into the local area and contribute to the local community. As our first shopping centre in Argentina, it is a cherished project for us and we trust that it will be a successful centre."

Carrefour's Property Division is the business unit of the Carrefour Group that develops and manages over 900 shopping centres totaling more than 4.1 million square meters in nine countries in Asia, Europe and Latin America.
