The New York/New Jersey hotel market did not record the high performance forecast for the Super Bowl weekend, according to a report from STR Analytics.

For the report, STR examined three areas - Bergen/East Rutherford in New Jersey, the Times Square area in New York and New York Uptown/Midtown East - which reported the largest positive impact during the popular sports weekend.

Compared to past Super Bowl host cities, the three areas reported less-than-anticipated occupancy during the Super Bowl weekend.

The Bergen/East Rutherford hotels reached an occupancy of 61.2-percent, increasing 69.4 percent from last year; Times Square Area hotels reported the highest occupancy, increasing 17.5 percent to reach 79.8 percent occupancy; and Uptown/Midtown East hotels reported 74.8-percent occupancy, increasing 23.6 percent.

Those figures compare to New Orleans, Louisiana, where occupancy reached 99.5 percent during the Super Bowl weekend in 2013, the report states.

Average daily rates for the weekend almost reached $400. In Bergen/East Rutherford, ADR increased 129.6 percent to $248.85. Times Square area hotels increased 102.0 percent to $379.84, and Uptown/Midtown East increased 54.1 percent to $382.66.

The largest gain in revenue-per-available-room was recorded in Bergen/East Rutherford hotels, jumping 289.1 percent to $152.34, followed by Times Square Area (+137.4 percent to $302.96) and Uptown/Midtown East (+90.3 percent to $286.39).

"RevPAR gain this year for area hotels during Super Bowl weekend was well behind Indianapolis' 907-percent RevPAR gain in 2012," STR states. "However, this was to be expected given the larger size of the New York/New Jersey markets, and the fact these latter markets often perform at strong performance levels, even in February, so year-over-year gains are harder to achieve."

In the days leading up to the Super Bowl earlier this month, locals took advantage of the influx of visitors. With the notion that hotel rooms were filling up, many started to rent their homes, some at very high prices.
